Teens in Southwest Florida Discover Jazz

On Wednesday, students trickled into a back room at Artis-Naples – their instruments tucked under their arms or inside cases.

Slowly the din of their collective scales and warm-ups, the buzzing into mouthpieces and the shuffling of sheet music filled the tiny room that was originally meant to accommodate only a handful of students.

Dan Miller, their director and an accomplished trumpeter who wanted to start the group for kids to teach them improv, cut through the noise to get practice started, then counted off for practice of their first five-piece ballad.
