Monterey 2009: A Gentle Liftoff

There’s something soothing about the way the Monterey Jazz Festival eases into existence every year. It’s like a family reunion: across the fairgrounds, old friends well met renew their acquaintance, trading news from the past year and comparing schedules. At the Garden Stage, saxophonist Roger Eddy serenades the gathering crowd with smoothly flowing bop standards and warm ballads that waft gently into the cool evening air.

The kids playing Beatles RockBand over in the Best Buy tent break the mood a bit, but then again jazz hasn’t really penetrated the video game market yet. Maybe next year there’ll be a John Scofield version of Guitar Hero. Or perhaps Nels Cline? I know several people who would play that
