But here&#039;s the thing: it was Brian Blade. And when all I can pick up from the drums is &quot;murmur-murmur-THUMP,&quot; I know there&#039;s a lot of detail I&#039;m just not hearing. That frustrates me.

I was standing in exactly the same spot for about half of Maceo Parker&#039;s set -- same acoustics, same crowd size, same speakers, and nothing bothered me at all. But that was a band with a very different musical texture.</description>
